FAQs

We’re providing free upgrades of  NBN equipment at selected Fixed Wireless locations to deliver better broadband for homes and businesses across regional and remote Australia. Upgrading your Fixed Wireless equipment now means you could access a more reliable connection and speeds up to 4x faster than what’s currently available today.*

If you’ve been notified that you’re eligible for an equipment upgrade, then please call the phone number on the letter provided to schedule your appointment. An NBN approved technician from one of our approved delivery partners Hills will then:

  • Remove your old Fixed Wireless equipment
  • Install a new NBN outdoor antenna and NBN connection box – most likely in the same location
  • Perform checks to ensure your connection is working before they leave
  • Complete the appointment generally within two hours.

Please be aware that someone over 18 will need to be present whilst the equipment upgrade is taking place.

It’s also worth noting that you can continue to use the gateway (router/modem) provided by your phone and internet provider.

*Available mid-2024. Your experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the NBN network, depends on the configuration over which services are delivered to your premises, whether you are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside of NBN’s control (like your equipment quality, software, chosen broadband plan or how your provider designs its network). Speeds may also be impacted by the number of concurrent users on the NBN Fixed Wireless network, including during busy periods.

You can ask to see the NBN approved technician’s identification to confirm they are working on behalf of NBN.

All official NBN material will always feature the NBN logo and our technicians and workers will have an enAble™ digital identification card. The enAble™ digital identification card features a QR code that you can scan to confirm its validity.

We encourage you to always request to see this card before providing physical access to your premises.

The NBN approved technicians who install nbn equipment for a Fixed Wireless connection are from delivery partners Hills Technology Solutions (Hills).

You may receive an SMS from Hills. The SMS may have NBN along with Hills as the sender of this message, like “Hills NBN”.

The reply message will come from +61 480 089 729 or a call from Hills may come from 02 8239 7101.

You will have your current outdoor antenna and NBN connection box replaced. The upgraded equipment will
include:

  • An NBN outdoor antenna which will be mounted on your roof to transmit the signal from the NBN tower to your premises, and
  • An NBN connection box similar in shape and size to your current device, which will transmit the signal to your connected devices.

The NBN Fixed Wireless equipment includes an NBN outdoor antenna and NBN connection box that can be installed inside or outside your property.

For equipment upgrades, the technician will install the new equipment in the same position as the existing equipment. On some occasions, we may need to relocate the external antenna to improve the strength of the signal, but the technician will ask for permission before doing this.

The technician may ask for permission from you (or an authorised person over the age of 18) to drill into walls to complete the installation.

While we aim to keep you connected as much as possible during this process, you may be offline for up to two hours while the equipment is swapped over.

The upgrade appointment and equipment are all free of charge. However, if you need to have equipment relocated, you’ll need to contact your phone and internet provider so that they can advise you of the cost and arrange for a technician to move the equipment. NBN approved technicians will not ask for money to perform an upgrade. Refer to the question “I want to relocate my Fixed Wireless antenna; how do I do this?” for more info.

If you need to have equipment or cables relocated, you’ll need to contact your phone and internet provider so that they can advise you of the cost and arrange for a technician to move the equipment.

Things to consider for the new location of the NBN equipment:

  • The NBN connection box must be protected from water, steam, and excessive heat.
  • The location of the NBN connection box must be well ventilated, near a dedicated power point, and with unrestricted access – to check the indicator lights.
  • The NBN connection box must be positioned in a location away from busy areas and protected from damage, and with sufficient access and light to see if the device is functioning correctly.
  • The NBN outdoor antenna location is determined by Radio Frequency performance and line of sight with the Fixed Wireless tower in your area. It may not be possible to relocate this to any other position on premises.
  • You are responsible for the cost of relocation.

As a result, you may be directed to contact NBN. The latest version of the NBN Fixed Wireless customer equipment to be installed in your premises will be capable of working with 5G technology, which will provide access to the NBN network. This technology is also capable of supporting higher speed tiers when they become available.

If the weather on the day prevents the technician from performing any works safely then the appointment may not proceed and Hills will contact you to organise a new appointment. Alternatively, please call Hills on 1300 723 585 to reschedule your appointment.

Following the upgrade, the NBN approved technician will ensure there is a working service before they leave your premises.

However, if you are experiencing service problems after the technician has left, please contact your phone and internet provider to raise a service incident request.

While you might still be able to access your NBN Fixed Wireless service with your current equipment, the longer you keep using it, the less reliable your equipment could get. It could also impact the broadband experience of other premises in your area.

Hills, on behalf of NBN, is contacting you because NBN has identified that your Fixed Wireless equipment requires an upgrade. NBN has your contact details because either you or your phone and internet provider registered your details with NBN as an upgrade candidate.
